Social Activity Networks Shaping St. Petersburg

The fuller St. Petersburg study — three layers of social data, one map of how the city really divides.

The longer, fuller version of the Procedia paper. We added a third layer to the social-activity network: alongside geo-tagged VKontakte posts and Google Places, we brought in "Nash Peterburg" ("Our Petersburg"), the city's portal for reporting local problems — St. Petersburg's answer to 311.

Stacking the layers and running community detection on the combined network gives a zoning of the city that tracks its socioeconomic geography more faithfully than any single layer alone — the kind of read that's useful for planning, transport, and real estate. My part was the network analysis and clustering.
